Is Alan really free, also for client and commercial sites?

Yes. Alan is released under the GPLv2 or later licence, so you can use it on as many personal, client and commercial sites as you like.

Which edition should I download: WordPress or HTML?

Choose the WordPress theme if your site runs on WordPress — you manage posts in the dashboard and import the demo in one click. Choose the HTML template for a static site or your own backend (Laravel, Django, Node…): it is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Not sure? Download both in one package.

How do I switch between the prebuilt designs?

Go to Appearance › Customize › Alan Theme Options › Layouts & Designs to choose the default home page, header, post and archive design. A page or post can use a different header (Alan: Header style box), a post can pick its layout under Post Attributes › Template, and each category can pick its archive layout under Posts › Categories.

How do I make a story appear in the hero?

Put it in the category chosen under Customize › Alan Theme Options › Front Page Layout › Hero mosaic category (the demo uses "Featured"). The badge then shows the story's other category.

How do I set a category's colour?

Go to Posts › Categories, edit the category and set its Badge colour.

The newsletter widget does nothing. Why?

Install MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress, create a form and enter its ID in the widget, or enter your mailing provider's form action URL.
